A new global recall campaign is testing the reputation of German automaker Volkswagen in the electric vehicle segment. Following recent rigorous quality control checks, the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer has identified non-conformities in its high-voltage batteries, initiating a wide-ranging action targeting tens of thousands of electric vehicles.
The recall campaign targets over 72,000 electric vehicles produced between 2022 and 2025. The problem is not a minor one, but is directly related to the integrity of the cells in the high-voltage batteries.
● Affected range: Popular models such as the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, ID.7 and ID.Buzz, as well as the Cupra Born electric sports car (produced between 2022 and 2024), are on the list of vehicles affected by this manufacturing error identified at the cell batch level.
● Technical risk: According to internal analyses carried out by German engineers, certain cell batches may show increased sensitivity to excessive thermal stress. This vulnerability can generate, in isolated cases, a sharp overheating of the battery, increasing the risk of fire.
Until a definitive technical solution is implemented in the service network, the manufacturer has issued clear recommendations for all owners of vehicles targeted by this campaign.
● Customer notification: Owners of affected vehicles will be formally contacted via written notifications or via dedicated apps connected to the car.
● Charge level restriction: As an immediate safety measure to reduce thermal stress on the suspect cells, drivers are advised to limit the maximum battery charge level to 80%. In some markets, this restriction may also be enforced via temporary software updates sent remotely.
The technical approach to fixing this problem varies depending on the specific diagnosis of each individual vehicle:
● Digital interventions: In some cases, the failure or associated risk can be remedied by a simple software update of the battery management system, optimizing operating parameters and thermal monitoring.
● Physical inspections and replacements: Where tests indicate a real risk from a specific batch of cells, authorized workshops will carry out thorough checks, and will repair or replace the affected battery components or modules, completely free of charge for customers.
A recall of such magnitude at a global level inevitably raises questions among the community of electric vehicle owners in Romania.
1. Presence on the local market: The models in the ID. family (ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, ID.Buzz), as well as the Cupra Born, enjoy considerable popularity in Romania, being purchased both through the official network of authorized dealers and through recent imports from Western Europe.
2. Direct impact: Romanian drivers who own models manufactured in the mentioned period (2022–2025) and whose cars are part of the problem batches will be officially notified by the authorized service network in Romania. Until receiving the official summons and performing the service check, owners in the country are advised to preventively apply the 80% charging limit measure at public or domestic stations.
3. How to check the car: Owners can check if their vehicle is included in the active campaign by entering the chassis series (VIN) on the official brand portal or by directly contacting the nearest authorized Volkswagen or Cupra dealer. All diagnostic, update or replacement operations carried out as part of this safety campaign are fully supported by the manufacturer.
