Chinese automaker BYD is consolidating its presence on the domestic market through a strategic launch aimed at redefining the urban hatchback segment. The new BYD Dolphin G DM-i has officially arrived in Romania, becoming the only B-segment (supermini) model equipped with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) propulsion system. With a total autonomy exceeding the 1,000 kilometer mark and an extremely competitive starting price, the new model promises to become a formidable rival for established European models.
The great innovation brought by the Dolphin G DM-i lies in its propulsion architecture. While most competitors in the urban segment offer either classic gasoline engines or full-hybrid (HEV) systems, BYD introduces the advanced Super Hybrid DM-i (Dual Mode intelligent) technology.
The system integrates a 1.5-liter gasoline engine (operating on the efficient Atkinson cycle) with an electric motor on the front axle and the famous Blade (LFP) battery developed in-house by BYD. This mix ensures remarkable efficiency figures:
Although it is a compact model, adapted to large urban areas, with a length of 4,160 mm and a width of 1,825 mm, the Dolphin G DM-i hides an extremely spacious interior. Thanks to the dedicated platform and the generous wheelbase of 2,610 mm, the car offers an optimized interior space for five adults and a trunk with a volume of 425 liters — a value superior to many hatchbacks in higher segments. With the rear seats folded down, the total loading capacity increases to 1,225 liters.
Customers in Romania have at their disposal a range structured in four equipment levels, well differentiated in terms of features and technology: Active, Boost, Comfort and Sport.
To customize the exterior, the manufacturer offers five modern shades:
Design Focus: The top-of-the-line Sport trim level has been specially designed for those who want a dynamic presence on the road. This version adds a number of distinctive exterior aesthetic details, 18-inch alloy wheels with a black finish and two-tone interior combinations made of premium materials.
To quickly attract a large volume of customers, BYD is proposing an extremely aggressive pricing strategy at its local debut. The base trim level, Active, has a promotional launch price of just 21,990 euros including VAT, instantly becoming the most affordable plug-in hybrid (PHEV) car available in Romania.
Here is how the main technical characteristics of the range are divided:
| Trim Level | Battery Capacity | EV Range (WLTP) | Total Range | Key Features & Equipment |
| Active | 7.42 kWh | ~40 km | 1,020 km | Promotional price of €21,990, central touchscreen, full ADAS safety suite, 3.3 kW AC charging |
| Boost | 18.33 kWh | 105 km | 1,040 km | Larger battery, optimized alloy wheels, upgraded suspension, 39 kW DC fast charging |
| Comfort | 18.33 kWh | 105 km | 1,040 km | 12.8" rotating screen, heated seats & steering wheel, 15W wireless smartphone charger |
| Sport | 18.33 kWh | 105 km | 1,040 km | Distinctive sport exterior accents, dual-tone interior, 18" black alloy wheels, panoramic sunroof |
According to the brand's strategy, the official order list for the new BYD Dolphin G DM-i will be opened before the summer holidays. Those who want to benefit from the special launch prices will not have to wait long for delivery: the first units intended for Romanian customers will arrive in the country in early autumn.
A major long-term advantage for the European market is BYD's decision to assemble this model locally, at its new state-of-the-art factory in Szeged, Hungary. This will guarantee much faster delivery times and protect the model from additional customs duties applied to cars imported directly from China.
