The Braila Bridge is undergoing repairs again: Traffic restrictions until the end of June

Romania's "Golden Gate", again "under the knife": The Brăila Bridge is undergoing major asphalt repairs

What was supposed to be the pride of Romanian infrastructure is gradually turning into a perpetual construction site. Authorities have announced a new round of restrictions and remedial works on the suspension bridge over the Danube, after problems with the asphalt pavement continued to cause headaches for builders and drivers alike.

A history marked by "bumps"

Inaugurated with great fanfare in the summer of 2023, the Brăila bridge — the third largest in Europe — promised to revolutionize the connection between Muntenia and Dobrogea. However, shortly after the ribbon cutting, the reality on the ground began to “vibrate”. Drivers quickly reported the appearance of pronounced bumps (the famous asphalt “waves”), and images of screws that could be removed by hand went viral, generating a wave of criticism of the quality of execution.

The National Road Infrastructure Management Company (CNAIR) has adopted a firm position, refusing final acceptance of the work until the builder fixes all deficiencies at his own expense.

Details of the new intervention: What drivers need to know

Current repairs aim to restore the wear layer, a critical operation for traffic safety and the longevity of the structure.

  • Target period: May 12 – June 30.
  • Work area: DN 2S, between km 4+500 and km 6+600.
  • Nature of work: Milling of existing asphalt and laying of a new bituminous coating.

Traffic restrictions and diverted routes

To allow the equipment to intervene, traffic will undergo major changes. If you are planning to cross the Danube in the coming period, here is how it will be:

Affected Segment Measure Adopted Traffic Solution
Direction 2 (Tulcea - Brăila) Total closure between km 7 and km 3 Traffic is diverted to the opposite side.
Direction 1 (Brăila - Tulcea) Remains open Traffic will flow in both directions (single lane per direction).

The restrictions concern the section between the toll station and the headquarters of the Brăila Maintenance and Coordination Center (CIC).

A stress test for the builder's reputation

This new round of paving is more than just maintenance; it's a credibility test. Infrastructure experts are watching closely to see if the asphalt recipe this time will withstand the high temperatures and heavy traffic, issues that have led to premature degradation in previous years.

Until the works are completed at the end of June, drivers are advised to drive with caution and to expect slightly increased waiting times in the bridge area, given the narrowing of the lanes. The "Golden Gate" of Romania remains, for the time being, a spectacular objective, but which is still looking for its lasting finishes.
