Renault Group, in partnership with the software development and consulting firm EVANTAGE Soft and the National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest, officially announced the opening of the ASPIRE laboratory. The project name stands for Automation, Simulation, Prediction and Intelligence Research, and is designed as a center dedicated to the research and development of advanced technologies based on artificial intelligence.
The new space is hosted within the Faculty of Automation and Computers and was created to offer students and researchers the opportunity to work on projects with direct applicability in the global automotive industry. The initiative aims to accelerate the journey of innovative solutions, from the concept and academic research phase to validation and industrial implementation on future Renault Group vehicles.
The ASPIRE laboratory has a capacity of 50 seats and is equipped with a state-of-the-art hardware and software infrastructure. The equipment made available to students provides the computing power necessary to run complex machine learning algorithms, virtual simulation and real-time data processing.
In this dedicated environment, the theoretical ideas of young engineers will be tested and transformed into concrete applications. The projects developed will address essential areas of the modern automobile, such as autonomous driving, propulsion system optimization, maintenance prediction, sensor data analysis and cybersecurity.
The leadership of POLITEHNICA University of Bucharest emphasizes the strategic importance of connecting the academic curriculum with the dynamic demands of the labor market. With a tradition of over two centuries in education and research, the institution aims to transform classroom hours into practical experiences directly applicable in industry.
Mihnea Costoiu, the rector of POLITEHNICA Bucharest University, highlighted the crucial role of this partnership: "Artificial intelligence is already transforming entire industries, and universities have an essential role in preparing the generation that will work in these fields. At POLITEHNICA Bucharest, we want students to not only learn about the technologies of the future, but to have the opportunity to discover and develop them through research, concrete projects and collaborations with industry. The partnership with EVANTAGE Soft and Renault Group creates precisely this context in which academic expertise meets the real needs of the economic environment. With over 200 years of tradition in education and research, we continue to build such bridges between university and industry, to provide future engineers with the skills, experience and opportunities they will need in an economy that is in continuous transformation."
The launch of the ASPIRE laboratory reconfirms Romania's position as a central pillar in the Renault Group's global research and development network. The industry's transition from traditional vehicles to Software-Defined Vehicles requires constant investment in human resources in the information technology area.
François Lavernos, CIO and Chief Digital Officer of the Renault Group, outlined the brand's strategic direction:
“The automotive industry is undergoing a profound transformation, in which software, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and new technologies play an increasingly important role in structuring the development, production and distribution processes of vehicles. For Renault Group, Romania already represents a major center of competence in the field of software engineering. To maintain and strengthen this position, we must constantly invest in future generations of specialists. Partnerships with universities are essential, and by launching the ASPIRE laboratory we aim to contribute to creating an environment in which students can work with the most advanced technologies and participate in projects that respond to the profound transformations that the automotive sector is going through.”
The lab represents the first step in a long-term collaboration aimed at developing a network of innovation hubs within the university. Students will benefit from a full package of professional and educational opportunities, including internships, hackathons, and the development of bachelor's, master's and doctoral theses on topics proposed directly by industry specialists.
In addition, the project supports an important transition for the automotive and IT sectors in Romania, facilitating the shift from a traditional model based on outsourcing to the creation of intellectual property, proprietary technical solutions and know-how with high added value.
