Nissan X-Trail 2027: The future of the Japanese SUV is revealed through sharp lines and e-POWER technology

Although the current X-Trail recently received a facelift, Nissan is already looking beyond the horizon. The Japanese brand has released the first official images of the fifth generation of its flagship SUV, promising a visual revolution and a purely electric driving experience without the stress of a plug-in.

Nissan recently unveiled the next iteration of the X-Trail at a global event held at its headquarters in Yokohama. Scheduled to officially debut in 2027, the new model marks a radical aesthetic break from the rounded shapes of the current generation, adopting a much more aggressive and technological design language.

Design: Goodbye curves, hello right angles

If the current model (launched in 2022) relied on a robust but friendly presence, the fifth generation seems sculpted with surgical precision.

  • Front: It is dominated by a massive trapezoidal grille, which occupies almost the entire "face" of the car, flanked by segmented LED optical blocks. These not only provide a futuristic light signature, but also integrate advanced sensors for assistance systems.
  • The profile: The doors feature deeply sculpted surfaces that direct airflow, while the plunging roof is painted in a contrasting black, giving the SUV a lower, more dynamic silhouette.
  • The mystery inside: Nissan has chosen to keep the cabin a secret for now, but industry sources suggest it will be completely digital, with large screens running the group's new AI-powered interface.

The heart of the system: A hybrid that thinks it's electric

The big star under the hood remains the e-POWER technology. Although full technical details are still under embargo, we already know the system architecture:

  1. Engine: A 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder gasoline unit with variable compression. Its role is strictly as a generator; it does not turn the wheels, but produces electricity for the battery.
  2. Electric motors: The new X-Trail will use a dual-motor configuration (one on each axle), offering intelligent all-wheel drive under the name e-4ORCE.
  3. Driving Experience: Because the wheels are driven solely by electric motors, torque is instantaneous. Nissan promises an experience identical to that of a 100% electric vehicle (EV), but with the advantage of fast refueling at the pump.

"The new X-Trail is our bridge to total electrification. It is the ideal solution for customers who want the refinement of an EV without changing their lifestyle," brand officials said during the presentation.

A global strategy under different names

In the North American market, the model will continue to bear the name Rogue, where it is expected to debut towards the end of 2026 as a 2027 model. For the first time, the e-POWER version will also be the spearhead on the American continent, where until now customers preferred purely thermal engines.

In Europe, the new X-Trail will have to contend with big-name rivals like the new Toyota RAV4 (also due in 2027) and the Skoda Kodiaq. While the exact arrival date in European dealerships remains uncertain, next year's global launch will surely bring the full price and specification list.

Until then, the current facelift remains a solid option, but images of the new generation are already making the wait a test of patience for the brand's fans.

Do you think aggressive design and 3-cylinder engine (as a generator) are the right direction for a family SUV, or do you prefer classic hybrid approaches?
