Mercedes-Benz confirms the launch of the new generations of GLE, GLE Coupe and GLS: Official date and first details

Triple offensive in Tuscaloosa: Mercedes-Benz reveals the new generations of GLE, GLE Coupe and GLS

The Stuttgart-based automaker has lifted the curtain on its upcoming large SUV portfolio. Through a teaser image that leaves room for interpretation but confirms the brand's ambitions, Mercedes-Benz announces the simultaneous launch of three of the most important pillars of its range: the new GLE, GLE Coupe and GLS.

The automotive world is turning its attention to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where the world premiere of these models will take place on March 31, 2026. The choice of location is not accidental, as the American plant is the "home" where these SUVs come to life for the global market.

A reinvented legacy: From the M-Class to the SUV of the future

For fans of the brand, this launch marks a historic moment of continuity.

  • The Mercedes-Benz GLE is entering its 5th generation (third under its current name), carrying forward the legend inaugurated by the M-Class in 1997.
  • The Mercedes-Benz GLS, the "S-Class of SUVs", reaches its 4th generation, maintaining the top-of-the-range status it has consolidated since the time it was called the GL-Class.

What we know so far: Stellar design and "Digital Light" technology

While technical details are closely guarded, behind-the-scenes information and the teaser image suggest a major change in visual identity. The biggest news includes:

  • Iconic light signature: The headlights will integrate daytime running lights (DRL) in the shape of the famous three-pointed star, a design element already seen on the new CLA-Class concept.
  • 3D illuminated grille: Inspired by the new E-Class, the grille will feature a luminous outline and a three-dimensional pattern that will emphasize the "luxury SUV" presence.
  • Revolution under the hood: All engines will be electrified. 48V mild-hybrid systems will be standard, and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) versions will offer electric ranges exceeding 100 km, thanks to new fourth-generation batteries.

How much will they cost in Romania?

The Romanian market has always been a welcoming one for Mercedes-Benz SUVs, and the new models are expected to arrive in showrooms in the second half of the year. Considering the technological leap and economic trends, here are the estimated starting prices (VAT included):

Model Estimated Starting Price Likely Base Version
The New GLE €86,500 GLE 300 d 4MATIC
The New GLE Coupe €96,000 GLE 300 d 4MATIC Coupe
The New GLS €124,500 GLS 450 d 4MATIC

The ultra-luxury Maybach versions and AMG performance variants will exceed the threshold of €180,000 and €150,000, respectively.

The March 31 event promises to be one of the most important automotive moments of the year for the German manufacturer, reaffirming Mercedes-Benz's position in a segment increasingly contested by rivals from BMW (X5/X7) and Audi (Q7/Q8).
