The Stuttgart-based performance division has officially unveiled the updated version of its top-of-the-line Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4Matic+ models (both in the classic SUV and Coupe versions). The German manufacturer promises a perfect balance between extreme sportiness, long-distance comfort and everyday utility, all under the umbrella of a major technological revolution under the hood.
The most important new feature is the 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine. The unit, known as the M177 EVO, has undergone a series of fundamental engineering changes designed to keep it compliant with future strict emissions regulations without sacrificing legendary AMG performance.
The central element of this update is the adoption of a “flat-plane” crankshaft. This technical solution, taken from motorsport, reduces rotating masses, improves the engine’s ability to quickly accelerate and guarantees extremely precise throttle response.
Flat-plane crankshaft for instant response.
Modified intake camshaft and redesigned intake/exhaust manifolds.
Optimized fuel injection system and improvements to the turbine (casing and compressor wheel).
State-of-the-art exhaust gas after-treatment system, equipped as standard globally with a particulate filter.
The “One man, one engine” philosophy: each engine continues to be assembled by hand by a single technician in Affalterbach.
Unchanged performance, increased efficiency: The engine develops the same 450 kW (612 hp) as its predecessor, and the maximum torque of 850 Nm is available over a wide speed range, between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm.
The engine upgrades are complemented by mild-hybrid technology, which integrates the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) 2.0 system and a 48-volt electrical network. The ISG adds another 17 kW (23 hp) and an impressive 205 Nm of torque, providing extra power at low revs, energy recovery during deceleration and an extremely smooth engine restart in Start/Stop mode.
Thanks to this technological arsenal, dynamic performances are electrifying:
Acceleration 0-100 km/h: in just 3.9 seconds for both body styles.
Top speed: electronically limited to 280 km/h.
The acoustic experience is provided by the new AMG Performance exhaust system. Thanks to the electronically controlled flaps (available as standard), the sound can be shaped according to the driver's mood: from a discreet and refined note in Comfort mode to an aggressive roar, punctuated by controlled misfires in Sport+ mode.
To manage the enormous mass and power, Mercedes-AMG has equipped the new models with advanced drive technologies:
On the outside, the GLE 63 S 4Matic+ gets a completely redesigned front end, dominated by the AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical bars, oversized air intakes for optimal V8 cooling and a new LED light signature. The rear is marked by trapezoidal twin tailpipes and a prominent air diffuser. Customers can opt for light-alloy or forged wheels up to 22 inches.
Inside, luxury combines with digital sportiness:
Through the MANUFAKTUR personalization program, customers can configure their models with exclusive body colors (such as Hightech Silver Magno or Ireland Mid Green Metallic) and unique interior packages, transforming each SUV into a unique collector's item.

Although Mercedes-AMG has just lifted the curtain on the updated version of its monsters powered by the new V8 M177 EVO engine, the official importer Mercedes-Benz Romania is already preparing the ground for the local launch. For those who want to put the new engineering gem from Affalterbach in their garage, here are the essential details regarding the delivery schedule and costs.
When will it hit showrooms? Order lists for the local market are expected to become active in the second half of this year. The first physical units intended for Romanian customers and press tests will arrive in the authorized dealer network towards the end of the year or early next year. Due to the “One man, one engine” philosophy (which limits the pace of manual engine production), waiting times for highly customized configurations through the MANUFAKTUR program can exceed 6 months from the time of order placement.
Price estimates: Threshold of exclusivity. Although exact list prices have not yet been uploaded to the official Romanian configurator, European pricing trends and massive engine upgrades provide a clear picture of costs:
Pay attention to the options: The standard already comes extremely well equipped (with AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension and Performance exhaust), but a special paint from the MANUFAKTUR Magno palette (approx. €5,000 - €7,000), 22-inch forged wheels and the carbon interior package can quickly propel the final purchase price beyond the €190,000 - €200,000 threshold.
On the Romanian market, the new updated GLE 63 S will resume a fierce price and performance battle with its traditional rival from Munich, the BMW X5 M / X6 M Competition.
