The world of speed enthusiasts recently received news that made the rounds on the internet: Mercedes-AMG, the performance division of the Stuttgart-based manufacturer, seems to have indirectly admitted that the extreme “downsizing” strategy for the legendary C 63 was not to everyone’s taste. Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG, confirmed that the current 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will be eliminated, making way for a more noble architecture.
Although the current Mercedes-AMG C 63 SE Performance is a technological monster, developing a staggering combined output of 680 hp and 1,020 Nm of torque, fans couldn't get over the lack of the baritone sound and character of a big engine.
According to the latest information, the future model (expected in the second half of 2026) will drop the "63" badge in favor of the C 53 name. Under the hood, the 3.0-liter, inline-six engine (code M256M) will be installed, taken from the fresh CLE 53. Schiebe emphasized that this unit will be a "pure" one, without a complex plug-in hybrid system, relying at most on a 48V mild-hybrid system.
Officially, the decision is motivated by preparation for Euro 7 emission standards, but automotive analysts suggest that modest sales and harsh feedback from customers, who preferred the rival BMW M3 (which retains the 6-cylinder engine), weighed decisively.
Romania remains a fascinating market for the AMG division. Despite the high prices, Romanians' appetite for performance SUVs and luxury models is at an all-time high.
Top AMG Sales in Romania:
Mercedes-AMG G 63: The undisputed "King" of sales in Romania. The G-Class model, in its top version, is a status symbol and a favorite of luxury customers, constantly dominating the AMG registration rankings.
Mercedes-AMG GLE / GLE Coupe (53 and 63 S): Versatility combined with raw performance makes the GLE a top choice for Romanian roads.
Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe: A spectacular presence on the streets, preferred by those who want supercar performance in a practical format.
Mercedes-AMG A 35 / A 45 S: The division's "hot hatches" are extremely popular among young audiences, being the most accessible gateways to the AMG universe.
Prices and Availability
In Romania, purchasing an AMG is a serious investment. While an A 35 4MATIC starts at around 55,000 - 60,000 euros, the top models quickly cross the six-figure threshold:
Mercedes-AMG C 63 SE Performance (current): List price starts at around 110,000 euros.
Mercedes-AMG G 63: Starts at over 190,000 euros, but with customized options through the Manufaktur program, the price frequently exceeds 250,000 euros.
Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE Performance: The flagship of performance can reach 210,000 - 230,000 euros.
The abandonment of the 4-cylinder engine in the mid-range is a victory for purists. Even if the future C 53 might have less horsepower on paper than the current hybrid, the promise of an inline 6-cylinder engine brings back that “emotion” that AMG fans are looking for. Meanwhile, in Romanian showrooms, the G-Class and large SUVs continue to be the undisputed stars, proving that, for the Romanian public, imposing presence and engine sound remain a priority.
