Recalls are a natural practice in the modern automotive industry, representing an essential mechanism for passenger safety. However, when these actions reach mass proportions and affect millions of vehicles simultaneously, they inevitably attract the attention of the public and the authorities. In this landscape, the American manufacturer Ford seems to have a title that no other brand wants: the absolute leader in service recalls.
If last year Ford set a historic record in the industry, initiating 153 recall campaigns that targeted approximately 13 million cars, the pace in 2026 shows that Americans are about to "overcome" their own negative performance.
From the beginning of 2026 to the present, the Dearborn builder's balance sheet looks like this:
50 recalls launched in just a few months.
11,271,100 vehicles affected globally.
A single mega-campaign of 4.4 million units, targeting the famous F-Series pickup range (the best-selling model in the brand's portfolio).
The biggest technical issue this year is digital in nature. On the F-Series models in question, a software bug prevents the brakes and trailer lights from working properly when they are attached to the vehicle. Fortunately for owners and the company's budget, Ford plans to fix this defect through an Over-The-Air (OTA) update, without the need for a physical visit to a dealership.
This avalanche of problems has put Ford under the scrutiny of United States regulators (NHTSA), which have already imposed financial penalties on the manufacturer at the end of 2024 for poor management of previous recalls.
On the other hand, the official speech of Ford officials attempts to change the public perspective on these events:
"The large number of recalls is part of the brand's strategy to proactively search for and find hardware and software issues in the models in the portfolio. It is a transparent approach through which we want to protect our customers as much as possible."
For Romanian drivers who own Ford models, the news of these millions of recalled cars sounds alarming, but the reality on the ground is significantly more nuanced. The direct impact on the Romanian market is, at this moment, minimal.
1. Specifics of the recalled models
The bulk of this year's figures (over 4.4 million units) belong to the F-Series pickup family (F-150, F-250, etc.). These models are developed almost exclusively for the North American market. In Romania, they are not officially sold in the Ford network, but arrive in extremely small numbers, only through parallel imports or niche companies. Therefore, the trailer connection software defect does not affect the domestic car fleet en masse.
2. European models and production in Craiova
The Ford portfolio in Romania and Europe is composed of completely different models, such as the Ford Puma (produced in Craiova by Ford Otosan), the Focus or the Kuga. These vehicles are configured on different technical and software platforms compared to the large utility vehicles in the US. Recall campaigns launched in America do not automatically apply to European models, unless there are common components from the same global suppliers (as was historically the case with Takata airbags).
While the massive wave of recalls in 2026 is a predominantly American issue, safety shouldn't be ignored. If you own a Ford vehicle, here's how to check if your car is affected by any local action:
