As the auto industry undergoes a period of profound transformation, the South Koreans at Kia are proving that they have found the recipe for global success. The first three months of 2026 marked a historic moment for the company, which reported its best first quarter in its entire existence.
With a strategy focused on diversifying its SUV portfolio and aggressive expansion into foreign markets, Kia is not only maintaining its relevance, but also setting new performance standards.
March 2026 was the main driver of this success. Kia managed to deliver 285,854 units globally, marking a 2.7% increase compared to the same period last year. This performance is not just a number in an Excel spreadsheet, but a confirmation of consumer confidence in a brand that, two decades ago, was considered a discreet “challenger”.
The success was also felt strongly beyond South Korea's borders. Exports and sales in international markets totaled 228,978 units, a slight increase of 0.4%, but enough to maintain the upward trend in a volatile economic climate.
If we look at the models that have driven the brand, we see a clear dominance of the SUV/Crossover segment. Here are the "stars" that have ruled the showrooms:
| Model | Units Sold (March 2026) | Market Positioning |
| Sportage | 48,885 | The undisputed leader of the lineup |
| Seltos | 31,761 | The urban favorite |
| Sorento | 21,285 | The premium choice for families |
In foreign markets, in addition to the dominance of the Sportage model, the new K4 is starting to gain ground, consolidating Kia's position in the compact sedan segment, where other manufacturers have chosen to withdraw.
The Old Continent seems to have developed a special affinity for Kia's "Opposites United" design language. The company set a new monthly record in Europe, with 58,750 units sold. This figure demonstrates that the mix of hybrid technology, accelerated electrification (through models such as the EV6 and EV9) and recognized reliability resonates perfectly with the demands of Europeans.
"The first quarter performance is not just a victory of numbers, but a testament to the brand's agility. In a market where many are stagnating, Kia is managing to find new sources of growth," note automotive industry analysts.
Looking at the big picture, the numbers speak for themselves. In the January-March 2026 period, Kia sold 779,169 units, surpassing last year’s record of 772,648 units. While the 0.8% percentage increase may seem modest at first glance, it represents a consolidation of volume on an already very high base.
With such a robust start to the year and a model range that seems to show no signs of fatigue, Kia is positioning itself as one of the main candidates for the title of “manufacturer of the year 2026.” It remains to be seen whether the rest of the year will maintain the same cruising speed, but for now, the South Koreans have every reason to open the champagne.
