Honda changes strategy: Abandons plan to become a purely electric brand from 2040

Honda abandons goal of becoming a purely electric brand by 2040

In a major strategic move that reflects the new realities of the global automotive market, Japanese manufacturer Honda has officially announced that it is abandoning its ambitious plan to exclusively market electric vehicles starting in 2040. Five years after assuming this target, the Japanese giant is changing tack and choosing a more pragmatic approach, bringing internal combustion engines and hybrid technology back to the forefront.

Market Reality vs. Paper Plans

In 2021, Honda surprised the automotive industry by promising a complete transition to electric propulsion by 2040. Today, however, the brand's management recognizes that the estimates from half a decade ago no longer correspond to the current dynamics of the economy and real consumer preferences.

Toshihiro Mibe, Honda's CEO, openly explained the reasons behind this radical decision, emphasizing that the old plan had become unrealistic due to uncertainties in the business environment:

"Due to the uncertainty in the business environment and also customer demand, changes are occurring beyond our expectations and, for this reason, we judged that it was too difficult to achieve this. That proportion is no longer realistic at this point. We have abandoned this target."

With this official announcement, Honda confirms great news for fans of traditional propulsion: the assembly lines will continue to produce cars with internal combustion engines even after the historic threshold of 2040. However, the manufacturer is not completely abandoning the environmental agenda. The ultimate goal of becoming a CO2-neutral company by 2050 remains, but the strategy to achieve this goal has been completely reconfigured.

The new hybrid offensive: 15 new models and a lightweight platform

Instead of betting everything on a single card (that of 100% electric vehicles), Honda is redirecting its energy and resources towards a completely new generation of hybrid powertrains. The short and medium term plan of attack is extremely aggressive and is based on solid technological pillars:

  • 15 new models: The manufacturer is preparing a massive offensive of products equipped with state-of-the-art hybrid technology.
  • Diversity under the hood: Unlike the current trend of downsizing, future Honda models will use high-performance 4- and 6-cylinder internal combustion engines.
  • Revolutionary architecture: The Japanese will introduce a completely new technical platform. This will be 90 kilograms lighter than the current architecture used for hybrid models, promising superior efficiency and improved driving dynamics.

First clues: A sedan and a premium SUV

Among the 15 new products planned, two vehicles have already been confirmed and are attracting public attention. The first is a next-generation sedan, which will be developed based on the recent Hybrid Sedan concept. The second model is an SUV, a proposal that will be marketed under the umbrella of the company's premium brand, Acura.

Honda's decision is not an isolated one in the current automotive industry, but confirms a global trend in which major manufacturers are reevaluating the pace of the transition to purely electric mobility, offering consumers much more flexible transition solutions adapted to the current infrastructure.
