Historic premiere in the M range: BMW launches the first all-wheel drive M2 in history

Revolution in the M range: The new BMW M2 receives xDrive all-wheel drive and 480 hp for the first time

Purists of the Bavarian brand might view this move with a critical eye, but the performance figures promise to dispel any doubts. Starting this summer, the smallest and most agile performance model in the German manufacturer's yard, the BMW M2, will be available with the xDrive all-wheel drive system for the first time.

This historic evolution transforms the compact sports car into a perfect weapon for any type of road, capable of putting power on the asphalt much more efficiently.

Under the hood: Figures that scare the competition

The heart of the new BMW M2 xDrive remains the well-established 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder in-line engine with TwinPower Turbo technology. For this version, the M division engineers have squeezed out no less than 480 horsepower.

Thanks to the superior grip offered by the intelligent xDrive system, power is instantly transmitted to all four wheels, transforming the car's behavior when starting from a standstill:

Top dynamic performance:

  • 0 - 100 km/h: Just 3.7 seconds (0.3 seconds faster than the standard rear-wheel drive version).
  • 0 - 200 km/h: 12.8 seconds.
  • Top speed: Electronically limited to 250 km/h (can be extended to 285 km/h by selecting the optional M Drivers Package).

"M Ignite" technology and pure RWD mode: Fun remains guaranteed

An absolute novelty introduced by this model is the pre-combustion technology called BMW M Ignite. This innovation is intended to reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions, making the engine fully compatible with the upcoming strict Euro 7 regulations, without sacrificing the brutal response of the engine.

For those who fear that all-wheel drive will dilute the car's playful character, BMW has some great news. The xDrive system is coupled with an active M differential and the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system, but it also comes with an ace up its sleeve: a 100% RWD driving mode. With a simple push of a button, the front axle can be completely disengaged, sending all the power exclusively to the rear wheels for drifting sessions like the book.

Standard equipment and a spectacular color palette

The new BMW M2 xDrive makes no compromises in terms of structural dynamics or aesthetics. The engine's resources are managed exclusively by an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission with integrated Drivelogic.

Standard Technical Configuration Details
Wheels/Tires 19-inch front axle / 20-inch rear axle
Braking System M Compound (6-piston calipers front / 1-piston rear)
Transmission M Steptronic automatic with Drivelogic

In addition to the mechanical upgrades, BMW is also bringing an infusion of visual freshness. The model marks the debut of a spectacular shade in the brand's portfolio: BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue. Customers will have access to an extremely generous personalization palette, which includes 5 metallic colors, 3 solid colors and no less than 6 exclusive shades from the BMW Individual range.

Availability and price in Romania: How much will the new BMW M2 xDrive cost?

Although the Bavarian manufacturer has confirmed the global launch for the end of this summer, fans in Romania won't have to wait long to configure their own copy.

When is it coming to showrooms in the country? The official opening of the control systems in the BMW Romania dealer network is scheduled for August, while the first actual deliveries on domestic roads are estimated for the end of autumn. Thus, the first customers will receive their cars just in time to test the capabilities of the xDrive system on slippery winter asphalt.

Price estimate: The psychological threshold of 80,000 euros. Until the official price list is published by the importer, we can make an extremely precise estimate based on the traditional pricing differences between the front-wheel drive (rear-wheel drive) and all-wheel drive (xDrive) versions in the M division portfolio:

  • Estimated starting price: €79,500 – €82,000 (VAT included).
  • How the price is justified: In Romania, the standard version of the M2 model is priced around 72,000 – 74,000 euros. The hardware upgrade for the xDrive system, which brings the mandatory M Steptronic automatic transmission to the basic equipment and the new power surplus to 480 hp, will add an estimated 7,000 – 8,000 euros to the final bill.

Configuration note: If you add the M Drivers Package (to unlock the 285 km/h speed), carbon sports seats and the exclusive BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue shade to the list of options, the final price of a fully configured copy will easily exceed the 95,000 euro threshold.

With this price, the new BMW M2 xDrive will position itself as a more powerful and aggressive alternative to models like the Audi RS3 Sedan, while remaining considerably more affordable than its bigger brother, the BMW M4 xDrive, the performance-price ratio being unbeatable for the premium compact segment.
