BMW officially presented the fifth generation X5 2027 G65, equipped for the first time with electric and hydrogen propulsion

The new BMW X5 G65 2027 makes its global debut: Five engine types, Neue Klasse technology and Level 2 autonomous driving

SPARTANBURG — In a watershed moment for the global automotive industry, BMW officially unveiled the fifth generation of its legendary X5 today, June 30, 2026. The original Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), which has redefined market standards since its debut in 1999, is stepping firmly into the future. The new iteration fuses the imposing proportions that have made the model famous with the cutting-edge technologies developed for the upcoming Neue Klasse model family.

The big revolution, however, is hidden under the hood: the new BMW X5 becomes the first vehicle in the brand's history designed to accommodate five different types of powertrains, bringing two absolute firsts: a fully electric version (BMW iX5) and a hydrogen-powered production version (BMW iX5 Hydrogen).

The most important details of the new generation BMW X5 (G65 / 2026):

1. Monolithic Exterior Design: The Language of the Neue Klasse

Aesthetically, the new BMW X5 impresses with a monolithic and powerful exterior appearance. The shapes are reduced, elegant, but extremely robust.

Front: It is completely vertical, dominated by the new vertical kidney grille equipped with the BMW Iconic Glow ambient lighting system.
Headlights: Debut with switchable “double-X” graphics for the daytime running lights. On the top-of-the-range M60e model, these are finished in the exclusive M Yellow colour.
Side profile & Rear: Athletic silhouette with a gently sloping roofline and very muscular wheel arches. The doors feature soft-close technology as standard and integrate the new aerodynamic BMW Winglet handles, capable of fully electric door opening. The taillights feature an intricate three-dimensional design that extends almost the entire width of the vehicle.

2. Inner Sanctuary and Avant-garde Materials

The passenger compartment has been completely redesigned for structural clarity, being fully optimized around the driver.

Industry first: For the first time, BMW is introducing slate as a hand-finished decorative surface, creating a gorgeous organic contrast in combination with the crystallized glass and unique “X”-shaped stitching on the door panels and dashboard.
Comfort: As standard, the new X5 offers a large panoramic glass roof and richly padded sports seats. Optionally, ventilated and massage multifunction seats in BMW Individual Merino leather are available. For exceptional acoustics, the car can be equipped with an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system with native Dolby Atmos support.

3. The Digital Revolution: THE NEW BMW PANORAMIC IDRIVE

The new X5 eliminates conventional screens and implements a digital architecture taken from the Neue Klasse, organized around four key elements:

BMW Panoramic Vision: Projects essential information across the entire width of the base of the windshield, directly into the driver's field of vision, eliminating the need for a classic instrument panel.
Central Display: A free-cut central screen, extremely thin and with stunning resolution.
BMW 3D Head-Up Display: Advanced three-dimensional graphics projected into the virtual space in front of the car.
"Shy Tech" steering wheel: Discreetly integrated controls that provide haptic feedback to the touch, allowing control of functions without distraction.
Optionally, a dedicated screen for the front passenger (BMW Passenger Screen) is also available for the first time, for independent media content.

4. An Absolute First: 5 Engine Types and Performance

For the first time, the modular platform supports 5 distinct propulsion systems:

Electric (BMW iX5 60 xDrive): Equipped with the sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology, it uses new cylindrical cells (higher, 120 mm) in a massive 141 kWh net (cell-to-pack) battery. It develops 578 hp and promises a class-record range of up to 525 miles (approx. 845 km) WLTP. DC fast charging capacity reaches 460 kW, with the system also offering bidirectional charging.
Hydrogen (BMW iX5 Hydrogen): The first series-production BMW powered by hydrogen. It combines BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage technology (flat tanks integrated into the floor) with a 3rd generation fuel cell system, offering a range of up to 466 miles (approx. 750 km) and refueling in just a few minutes.
Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV): The 50e xDrive and M60e xDrive models combine a 3.0-liter inline-6 gasoline engine (completely redesigned) with a 197 hp electric motor. The 26.5 kWh net battery provides an electric range of up to 63 miles (101 km). The top-of-the-line M60e xDrive delivers 612 hp and 800 Nm, propelling the SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds.
Diesel Mild-Hybrid (40d xDrive): 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine with 48V system, developing 670 Nm. From the factory, the car comes powered by environmentally friendly HVO100 fuel, reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 90%.
Mild-Hybrid Petrol: A highly efficient variant, aimed at specific global markets.

5. Driving Dynamics: ADAPTIVE SUSPENSION and the “Heart of Joy” Super-Brain

The BMW X5 retains the famous 50:50 weight distribution and offers unrivaled dynamics thanks to centrally controlled technologies:

ADAPTIVE SUSPENSION Standard: All models come standard with adaptive suspension. The iX5 electric model uses the Heart of Joy central supercomputer and BMW Dynamic Performance Control software to ensure a perfectly smooth ride. Thanks to the BMW Symbiotic Drive system, the stopping process is extremely smooth, canceling out pitching.
Adaptive Chassis Control Professional (Optional): Adds adaptive air suspension on both axles (with manual or automatic ground clearance adjustment) and Integral Active Steering. This allows the rear wheels to steer by up to 3.2 degrees, reducing the car's turning circle by 0.8 meters.

6. Top Safety: LEVEL 2 ADVANCED AUTONOMOUS DRIVING

Assistance systems reach the highest level of intelligence thanks to new sensors and radars:

Motorway Assistant: Enables Level 2 hands-free autonomous driving on motorways, up to the legal maximum speed or a threshold of 81 mph (130 km/h), with the driver legally able to take their hands off the wheel.
Eye-Confirmed Lane Change: A revolutionary technology where the car suggests an overtaking or re-aligning maneuver, and the driver can approve it with a simple intentional glance in the appropriate side mirror. The vehicle will then execute the turn completely autonomously.
Intelligent parking systems: The standard package includes Driving Assistant Plus and Parking Assistant with AI support. The Parking Assistant Professional version allows full remote parking control via smartphone using the My BMW app.

Launch in Romania: Availability and Estimated Prices

The new generation of the Bavarian SUV has already sparked massive interest on the Romanian market, and official BMW dealerships in the country are preparing intensively for its commercial debut. According to sources within the local dealer network, pre-order lists for the new BMW X5 will officially open in Romania in July 2026, just a few weeks after today's world premiere.

The first demonstration units are scheduled to arrive in showrooms in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara and Brașov in November-December 2026, with actual deliveries to the first customers starting in the first quarter of 2027 (Q1 2027). All conventional and plug-in hybrid engines will be available from day one. The all-electric iX5 version will arrive shortly after, while the revolutionary iX5 Hydrogen variant will initially be available on an exclusive basis, based on special leasing programs and selected fleets.

Although official list prices have not yet been published, estimates of the premium market in Romania (taking into account local taxes and the 19% VAT rate) configure the following indicative starting price grid:

BMW X5 40d xDrive - Mild-Hybrid Diesel (3.0L, 670 Nm) - from approx. €92,500
BMW X5 50e xDrive - Plug-in Hybrid Gasoline (26.5 kWh Battery) - from approx. €103,000
BMW X5 M60e xDrive - Flagship PHEV M Performance (612 hp) - from approx. €126,000
BMW iX5 60 xDrive - Fully Electric BEV (578 hp, 141 kWh Battery) - from approx. €138,000
BMW iX5 Hydrogen - Hydrogen Fuel Cell (FCEV) - Over €155,000 (special program estimate)

The standard equipment will be considerably richer for the Romanian market compared to the previous generation, including in the basic package the adaptive suspension, the Iconic Glow illuminated grille, the revolutionary BMW Panoramic Vision system, 4-zone automatic climate control and Adaptive LED headlights. Therefore, even if the starting price increases slightly, the value of the included equipment fully compensates for this difference, maintaining the new X5 as the main favorite in the large luxury SUV segment in Romania.
