More than five decades after the founding of the German manufacturer's sports car division, BMW M is celebrating a milestone in its automotive history: the production of its one millionth car. The anniversary model is a BMW M3 finished in the exclusive BMW Individual Fire Orange III, assembled at the BMW Group's main plant in Munich.
The anniversary car was handed over at an official ceremony in the heart of the brand. Peter Weber, Managing Director of the BMW Group Plant in Munich, handed over the keys to the M3 to Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH. The moment carries a special symbolic charge, taking place four decades after the launch of the first generation BMW M3 – the model that defined the concept of the sports sedan and shaped the identity of the high-performance brand.
For Franciscus van Meel, reaching this milestone confirms that the original recipe that underpins the brand continues to resonate with enthusiasts around the world. The BMW M Concept continues to combine dynamic prowess on the racetrack with the practicality and comfort needed in everyday use.
The celebration of the one millionth car looks directly to the future of the brand. This result motivates the Bavarian team to further develop the model portfolio, marking the transition to the new generation based on the BMW M Neue Klasse architecture, which will include fully electric high-performance versions.
The assembly lines of the Munich plant will host the production of the future all-electric BMW M3. This will be the first high-performance model to integrate M Neue Klasse technology and the second vehicle based on this platform to be built in the Bavarian capital, after the all-electric BMW i3. The high-performance M version will be manufactured exclusively in Munich, reinforcing the plant’s historic role within the group.
With a history of over a century in vehicle construction, the Munich plant is the central pillar in the BMW Group's transition to electromobility. Starting in 2027, the Bavarian location will produce exclusively fully electric vehicles.
The transformation process was carried out without stopping current production. A new body shop, a modern assembly line and expanded logistics facilities were built on approximately one third of the total area of the factory. The project benefits from massive investments from the BMW Group, totaling around 650 million euros, ensuring the transition to a digitalized and sustainable era.
